JAKARTA, Indonesia – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo asked the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to take concrete measures in order to realize the policy regarding social forestry which aims to increase the living standard of communities which are residing in and around forest areas.

“I ask for the elimination of challenges which are faced in our attempts to make social forestry come to realization,” he said in limited cabinet’s meeting in the State Palace which discussed issues of social forestry in Jakarta, on Wednesday, 21st of September.

Social forestry, also refered to as community based forest management, enables communities to extract forest products, including logging according to their needs but still considering the sustainability of forests, which will eventually improve their economic conditions.

"Currently, there are 10,2 poverty-laden individuals residing inside forest areas who are not equipped legal aspects in regards to forest resources,” Jokowi said.

According to the President, 25.863 villages in Indonesia are located either inside or around forest areas. At least 71 percent of them rely on the resources derived from the forest.

"We must immediately simplify regulations and procedures so that social forestry can be easily accessed by communities,” Jokowi stated. Realization of social forestry with a wide variety of schemes is still far from target. The scheme of community plantation, for instance, only saw realization of around 702 thousand hectares of land or 13% of the 5,4 million hectares which was targetted in 2014. The concession for community plantation forests also reached a mere number of 188 thousand hectares.

Jokowi also instructed governments to provide more attention to the rights of indigenous communities by publishing the validations of indigenous forests, especially for those who already fulfill the requirements.

“Please put a highlight on indigenous forests, that is extremely important,” he said.
